Hike to the Top of Gibraltar Rock at Paul Lake
Designated a park in 1961, Paul Lake is a popular place for
boating, swimming, fishing, canoeing, hiking, kayaking, stand-up paddle
boarding, bird-watching, camping, mountain
biking and sightseeing. With 7 kilometres
of hiking trails, campground facilities, an adventure playground and 400 meters
of white sandy beach, Paul Lake is a great place to spend a hot summer day.
Parking is free and the trailhead is located beside the boat launch. The 900 meter summit of Gibralter Rock is reached at the end of a 1.3 kilometre trail. The trail is rugged so be sure to wear proper hiking shoes and don’t forget to bring a bottle of water. A bench is located at the summit for those who want to relax and enjoy the incredible view.
On your way back you may want to venture to the other side of the lake where private cabins line the shore. At the end of the frontage road is a parking lot for a small day park. From this side of the lake you get to see just how magnificent Gibraltar Rock is and give yourself a pat on the back for climbing to the top of it.
HOW TO GET THERE: - From downtown Kamloops, B.C. travel along Hwy #5 north for 5 kilometres. Take a right on Paul Lake Road and continue driving until you reach Pinantan Rd. Take a right on Pinantan road to the park entrance. Directional signs will point you to the park form the highway. It should not take more than half an hour to 45 minutes to reach the park from Kamloops.
